Mercy Canyon neighbors are reacting to chilling new details in the seemingly random murder of Karl Lee Bernardo.
I would have never imagined anything like this. This is just beyond,” said a Redding mother, Chrystal Stambaugh.
Police documents show 19-year-old Alejandro Nunez Armstrong confessed to drinking vodka before leaving his apartment Monday night with two stolen guns. He told police he wasn't planning on killing anyone when he left his apartment, but eventually, that changed.
Armstrong says once he reached the Mercy Canyon trail, he got an urge to kill someone, saying it would, “make him feel better.”
That's when he came up to 50-year-old Karl Lee Bernardo of Redding, a homeless man, inside his tent. Armstrong says he stepped closer to Bernardo and fired six shots at his head.
According to a police document, Armstrong lives in the Linden Apartments which is across the street from the Mercy Canyon where he confessed to killing Bernardo.
One woman living near Armstrong tells KRCR’s Daisy Caballero this is incredibly disturbing to hear. Until this news broke, she believed she and her 11-year-old son lived in a safe neighborhood.
For something like this to slip through the cracks it's like, 'Woah! Like, do we really know our neighbors like we think we do?'” said Chrystal Stambaugh. “Like, are we really as close-knit as we think we are?
During a search warrant of Armstrong's apartment, officers found five different guns with possibly hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Armstrong will appear in court on October 28 to be arraigned on a murder charge.
