No. 2 Eddies beat Sturgis, 53-13

No. 2 Edwardsburg scored 43 first-half points and ran away from Sturgis in the regular season finale on Friday night, 53-13.

The Trojans’ 13 points is the second-most Edwardsburg has surrendered on the season. Paw Paw is the only other team to post double digit points against the Eddies with 14. Coming into the contest, Edwardsburg had shut out five opponents on the year.

Sturgis end the season with a record of 3-6, the Eddies march into the Division 4 playoffs with a 9-0 mark and will host a playoff game on Friday.

Against Sturgis, Edwardsburg scored the opening two touchdowns of the game. The first was an 11-yard TD run from Jacob Walker that also saw a conversion pass. Up 8-0, Edwardsburg scored the next time it had the football on a 4-yard TD run from Connor Ostrander. The extra point was booted through and the Eddies led 15-0.

Sturgis answered immediately.

Jacob Thompson took the ensuing kickoff and ran 97 yards for a touchdown. He would add the extra point as well, trimming the Edwardsburg lead to 15-7.

The Eddies scored the 28 points in the game. In the first quarter, they got a TD run of 70 yards from Jacob Pegura and then a 33-yarder from Walker. The extra points on both were good and the Eddies led 29-7 after one.

In the second, Mikey Prior plunged in from two yards out for the first Eddies score. Andrew Colvin would run it in from 14 yards on the next possession. The extra points on both were good.

Trailing 43-7 at that point, Sturgis was able to get on the board with an explosive play.

QB Taner Patrick would find Rasean O’Tey for a 48-yard pitch and catch, putting the Trojans on the board. The point after was no good and SHS trailed 43-13 at that point.

In the second half, Edwardsburg scored once in the third quarter with a 58-yard run from Logan McCulley.

Trevor Houseworth, who booted in all the extra points, would connect on a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for Edwardsburg.

The Eddies piled up 508 yards of total offense compared to 159 for Sturgis. Edwardsburg rushed it for 480 yards on the ground on 44 carries for 10.9 yards per rush.

Patrick was 14-of-25 for 144 yards for Sturgis. O’Tey caught four for 68 yards, Thompson caught six for 39, Kaiden Waldron caught three for 30 yards and Gibson Cary hauled in a catch for seven yards. Dalton Tisdel led the rushing attack for SHS with 12 yards, Brenden Myers rushed three times for five.

Defensively, Tisdel led with seven tackles. Connor Strudwick made 6.5 stops, Cary was in on 4.5 tackles. Thompson collected 3.5, Ellis VanWager was in on 2.5 stops. Breckin Prichard, Matt Wickey and Waldron each had two tackles.
