The Atlanta Opera to Launch BIPOC Composer-Librettist Competition

The Atlanta Opera has announced the launch of its 96-hour opera project. 

The project is a composition competition is designed for those who self-identify as Black, Indigenous, Asian-American, Pacific Islander, Arab-Aramerican, Latin American, and other people of color and will feature  teams of composers and librettists as they write, cast, direct, and stage 10-minute operas in just four days. 

The winners of the competition will write an opera for The Atlanta Opera to premiere while also receiving $10,000 in cash. 

Morris Robinson will serve as artistic advisor for the competition, which is set to take place on June 20, 2022. 

“Projects like this one are necessary in order to move the needle for composers and librettists of color,” said Robinson in a press statement. “I’m proud to be part of a company that is doing this work.”

Applications to enter the competition kick off on Dec. 1, 2021.
