Ribbon-cutting held for Showell Elementary School

BERLIN, Md. – After more than a year, Showell Elementary school in Berlin finally had its dedication and ribbon cutting.

The school district tells us the pandemic pushed back the dedication for the 48 million dollar project, 6 million of which came from the state of Maryland. Administrators in the schools used the event to praise the leadership it took to raise the rest of the money locally They say that money went to much-needed upgrades that made the building a better place to learn.

“Handicap accessible is vital in our schools that was one of the things we made sure to add the old building didn’t have those facilities also with technology we are state of the art with technology here at the school which ill reinforce the learning process for our kids,” said Superintendent of Worcester County Schools Louis Taylor.

He says the new building also has safety and surveillance systems in place to better protect students and teachers. The school thanked the local government and their town council for securing the funding. Superintendent Taylor tells us they are thrilled that with the size of the new building they no longer have to use additional portable classrooms to be able to teach the growing number of children in their district.
