Syracuse, N.Y. — A 17-year-old fled from officers in the city’s Skunk City on Wednesday while he was holding a baby in one hand and a loaded handgun in the other, police said.

Police were called at about 2:44 p.m. for a suspicious person with a weapon in the 400 block of Fitch Street, according to a news release issued by Syracuse police.

It was reported that the teen was holding the handgun and the baby during a domestic dispute, police said.

As officers approached the teenager, he began to flee on foot with the baby, while pointing the handgun at officers, police said.

While one officer began chasing the teenager, another used her patrol vehicle to block the teenager and stop him from running, police said.

Officers wrestled the teenager to the ground and they were able to safely remove the baby from his arms unharmed, police said. The loaded handgun was recovered, police said.

The teenager was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, endangering the welfare of a child and resisting arrest, police said.

The teenager was taken to the Hillbrook Detention Center in Syracuse, according to the release.
