As the search continues for the suspect who shot and killed an 18-year-old outside her Inglewood home Monday, the victim’s family has spoken out.
Daina Monroe, who also went by her nickname “Gucci,” died from her injuries after she was shot while sitting in a car with friends on N. Inglewood Ave, officials said. A car reportedly drove up alongside the car Monroe, her sister and their friends sat in, rolled down its window, and fired shots at the car.
Monroe was taken to Centinela Hospital where she died of her injuries.
In a GoFundMe set up for her family, Monroe was described as “a shining star” and a “star athlete who loved all things volleyball.”
Her family told ABC 7 Monroe was an inspiration.
"I was just always trying to be there for her. I know she looked up to me, but I looked up to her even more. I don't know if she knew that, but she was definitely my rock star," Daejah Summerville, Monroe's sister, said.
Monroe’s mother called her daughter her “hero”.
"Like I always told her, she's my hero and I love her," Lyz Summerville-Monroe said.
The suspect has not been identified, nor have police released any details regarding the suspect’s car.
A candlelight vigil for Monroe will be held on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Bill Botts Park in Culver City.
