Lynchburg City Schools held a press conference Friday to discuss recent calendar changes and new academic data.
School board members and administrative staff addressed the public on their recent decisions.
Superintendent Dr. Crystal Edwards says the schedule change was not something they took lightly.
It was a compromise to provide staff the time they need to catch up on planning and grading, so teachers don’t need to take their work home. Edwards adds this will allow teachers to focus more on students in the classroom than having to worry about what else they have to do.
As for the recent school data, Edwards says the pandemic has caused a catastrophe for education.
“These results from this pandemic don’t represent what our students can do, they represent what happened to our students in the pandemic," Edwards said.
Administrative staff clarified that to get their math and English scores up they will continue with individual student action plans as well as having teachers work one-on-one with students and in small groups.
LCS admits the scores are low, but they plan to use a variety of techniques to intervene.
According to LCS, teachers are meeting on a weekly basis to see what they can do to increase student growth in particular subject areas.
