The Resident Boss Hints at Conrad’s New Love Life: ‘He Will End Up With Somebody’ Before Season 5 Is Over
Conrad Hawkins is about to navigate something messier than any Chastain Park surgery: dating after the loss of his wife.
At the end of The Resident‘s Oct. 19 episode, the Fox drama — spoiler alert for those not caught up yet! — leapt a little more than three years into the future, thus bypassing the darkest period of Conrad’s grief over his late wife, Nic. And though co-showrunner Peter Elkoff admits it’s been “very tricky” to determine when Conrad should move on romantically after the time jump, he confirms that the doc won’t stay single for the entirety of Season 5.
“[Conrad and Nic] were such a beloved couple, and she was arguably the love of this character’s life,” Elkoff shares. “He will end up with somebody, but not until we get closer to the end of the season.”
And though viewers have already speculated plenty about the identity of Conrad’s next love interest — including theories about Jessica Lucas’ Billie, or the newly cast ER doctor Cade, to be played by Gotham‘s Kaley Ronayne — Elkoff says Conrad’s love life will be a bit of a guessing game for those at home.
“We will try to tell stories in a way, going forward, where the audience will go, ‘It’s going to be her. Wait, no! I think it’s going to be her. No, wait a minute. I bet you it’s going to be her,'” the EP teases. “We’re going to try and pepper the episodes with moments of connection and collaboration and emotional moments with different people, where you feel like you’ve seen the beginning of something, and you may be right, or you may be wrong.”
Elkoff previously shared with TVLine that The Resident‘s creative team “didn’t want to have Conrad grief-stricken for an entire season of television,” which prompted the decision to jump ahead by several years. In the episodes ahead, Elkoff said, Matt Czuchry’s character will be in a place “where [Nic is] still in everybody’s hearts and minds, but that he’s able to be a whole, happy person in pursuit of his life and the raising of his daughter.”
the show is medical drama, not a romantic comedy. yeah nic and conrad story was the heart of the show, but that was one in a million, they dont need to become Greys anatomy where now Conrad will get a new love interest every season
just lets see him alone first, which is something the show never really has explore and could have been a breath of fresh air
Did you READ the article? They’re not heading towards romantic comedy or switching partners every season, and they’re waiting until the end of this season to attach Conrad to anyone.
“Let’s see him alone first”? That’s what they’re doing.
What are the chances that every time Conrad even so much as flirts with someone that his daddy-in-law will be right there rantin’and ravin’ about “you can’t do that to Nic’s memory” or some such crapola.
The Resident is not that type of show.
That would be sad. Nic died 3 years ago, and GG has grown up with only one parent. A step-mother who forges a bond with a young GG will be better both for her development and for their relationship long term. Also given that GG is his only family, Kyle really needs to have some kind of relationship with Conrad even if it icy overall.

I think this time jump is a GREAT idea. I did not want to watch a deeply grieving husband for an entire season. That’s the LAST thing a series needs.

This will be better. It’s not the showrunner, or Matt’s fault, Emily left. No one fired her, she left on her own for her own reasons, and the show has to pick up the pieces and move forward the best they can. it’s not fair for the rest of the cast and crew to suffer because one actress decided to leave.

You know sometimes you never find love again and that’s ok. But this TV and they want drama. Even more reason for me not to want to watch.
And sometimes you do find someone, and that’s ok too… finding someone after ur wife or husband died is part of life, at least its more common when the one left behind is still young. I mean, if u choose to be alone is fine but if u dont do it because u think u r betraying his or her memory then the grieving part isnt over.
Right. I stopped watching it too because there are too many gaps between episodes and seasons. months sometimes just like this time. I have lost interest, just moving on back to Law and Order SVU
Good. I was so sick of them. Happy couples are great in real life but on a tv drama, it makes for some boring television. So glad we will see him date. He is so sexy.
I think it should be Billie. Billie understands what Conrad is going through with Nics death more than anything. Even though I always like him with Nic, I always saw a little chemistry with Billie. It would make for great drama because both would feel like they are betraying Nic. Also he will be dealing with being a single dad while she will be dealing with the son she gave up. There is just way more storytelling for those two than of they bring on someone new he has to get to know all over again.
Sorry, but I don’t like that idea. Hooking up with his wife’s best friend is just weird. Bring on someone new.

I think Billie and Conrad actually make sense. I also think that if Nic were looking down on them from heaven, she would approve. Billie and Conrad do seem to get each other. They’re similar in personality and I think it’s likely that Billie helped out a lot with Gigi during the time we didn’t get to see. So, they probably spent some time helping each other grieve and then it might turn into more. I like that idea better than some random person that we don’t know at all.
Exactly. I could very well see Billie trying to encourage him to start dating again, only to realize she is falling in love with him. Billie has no chemistry with anyone else on the show but Conrad. The only available guy is AJ and they just don’t work for me. AJ needs Mina back or someone similar in personality. The only other fit I saw for her was Barrett but he is gone. So why not Conrad?
Agreed !! She needs to deal with her son !! He’s a grown man now but still deserves some answers of where he comes from. She needs to dig deep and tell him. The way she treats him now is much worse for him. No child should feel that they are a mistake, then abandoned. Something horrible happened to her, explain that !! This does happen in the real world!!
It makes sense. I love the show, but it’s a real possibility this could be it’s last season because it’s on FOX and it’s not a reality competition, animated comedy or from the mind of Ryan Murphy. I can accept a time jump if I could get a proper ending for his character

Billie was terrible on Gotham as much as The Resident, she can’t act. They need to get rid of her and her smart elic attitude. Put Conrad with a good person who will take to GiGi, like the girl in the daycare center. GiGi seemed to love her and vice versa

It’s gonna be Conrad and Devon. Devon has not had luck in the past with his relationships because he has been looking on the wrong side of the field. And Conrad wears a lot of accessories makes me think he had some college adventures.
Both Conrad and Devon are straight. I have see nothing wrong with that but not them.
Why do they keep saying “a little more than three years” time jump? The episode took place on Halloween night and ended on Halloween three years in the future. Therefore, exactly three years!

I think it’s a really privileged attitude, considering most of us have watch love stories for predominate White couples for forever. Now other ethnicities are starting to actual see themselves on TV in non-stereotypical roles, it is a problem. I don’t know if you have noticed but there is diversity in love and life all around you. It should be reflected in what we watch as well. TV is not just for you.

They passed on an opportunity to raise public awareness of the physical and mental impact of grief. It was an opportunity to show those grieving the loss of a loved one that they are not alone in what they are experiencing.
I realize it’s entertainment but why not educate at the same time.

This show would be a lot better if they would quit taking it off the air for long periods at a time. It makes you lose interest. Why not find another network to run this series? Fox seems to be trying to run too many other things, especially sports instead of keeping viewers interested in a good show.

Ok, I believe Conrad or Prevesh could handle that. Conrads’ new love can’t be another doctor, we have Devon and Leela and Jessica with..? I can’t remember his name. I bet Bell and Kat wind up together too, they make a good pair but all the docs together with another one gets old. Conrad needs to meet a Patient or someone from the little hang out bar they go to sometimes.

Totally agree! Could not believe this when I seen this headline. I don’t want to see Conrad with anyone else. He and Nic were too perfect together & I’m nowhere near ready to even Think about him with anyone else, even if it is towards the end of the season. End of Next season would still be iffy for me. It’s taken me about 2 months to watch the ep after Nics death as it is. I loved them together since the first ep and I’m still devastated about it, although I understand the writers were backed into a corner with her leaving.
I’ve hated Billie from the start, certainly wouldn’t want her with him.
I also thought the end of ep 5 was some sort of dream, even well into ep 6 I was still unsure if we were in some dream or alternate reality or goodness knows what.
Jessica Lucas is a beautiful actress but putting Billie and Conrad is a death wish to The Resident. Emily VanCamp has been the lead on successful Network shows, Jessica Lucas’ lead shows always get cancelled after a year. I was still waiting for the Canadian show “The Murders” to come back for season 2 when Jessica was cast on the resident and I found out the show wasn’t coming back. She doesn’t have a good track record. Hope they bring in a character that is highly likable, which will help the show continue on for more seasons. Billie’s like ability is so-so at best.
She is in a ensemble cast where she is not the lead for a show that is already well established. I think the show should avoid trying to use her to replace Vic. Keep her as she has always been. Her character is completely different than Vic, with different issues, and has a completely different personality. Vic was loving where Billie can be hard sometimes. So as long as they don’t try to morph her into what Vic was, she is fine as Conrad’s next love. JMO.
