The Shasta County Sheriff's Office is urging drivers to be alert and look out for pedestrians during the rainy weather after a woman was hit in the City of Shasta Lake Thursday night.
According to deputies, 39-year-old Jennifer Culkins was walking in the area of Shasta Dam Boulevard and Oregon Avenue just after 5 p.m. Thursday when she was hit.
Witnesses told deputies Culkins stepped in front of a truck that had stopped at the intersection when the driver of the truck, William Smith, accelerated to make a turn. Witnesses say Culkins became trapped under the car and medics were called to assist.
Deputies say a backpack Culkins was wearing had become stuck under the vehicle and she had been dragged roughly 50 feet. Culkins was taken to the hospital and treated for moderate injuries.
Deputies say Smith did not see Culkins when his truck hit her and he was not intoxicated at the time of the crash.
The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with further information regarding this incident to call SHASCOM at (530)245-6540.
