The FDA released information this week about a voluntary recall of onions based on reported illnesses associated with the possible salmonella consumption of fresh onions from Mexico. More than 650 cases of salmonella have been reported, including at least two in Oregon. Here is what to check:
The onions -- fresh (raw) whole red, yellow and white onions -- under recall originated in Chihuahua, Mexico, and shipped to the U.S. during July and August 2021 (Onions can last months if stored properly).
They may include, but are not limited to, jumbo, colossal, medium, summer, and sweet onions.
They were distributed to restaurants, wholesalers, foodservice customers, and retail stores. Oregon is listed by the FDA as one of the states where illness has been reported but Washington is not as of Friday.
The FDA has identified ProSource Produce LLC (also known as ProSource Inc.) of Hailey, Idaho, and Keeler Family Farms of Deming, New Mexico, as suppliers of potentially contaminated onions.
Keeler distributed onions in 25 lb. and 50 lb. mesh sacks. They contain a label that is marked as MVP (product of MX), but were processed at Keeler Family Farms. The last to ship was on August 25, 2021.
Keeler’s recall notice said, in part: Consumers, restaurants, and retailers should not eat, sell, or serve red, white, yellow, or onions from Keeler Family Farms or products containing such onions. If you cannot tell if your onion is from Keeler Family Farms, or your food product contains such onions, you should not eat, sell, or serve it, and should throw it out.
ProSource sent out onions in 50 lb., 25 lb., 10 lb., 5 lb., 3 lb., and 2 lb. mesh sacks; and 50 lb., 40 lb., 25 lb., 10 lb., and 5 lb. cartons.
They were distributed by the following distributors and/or under these brands: Big Bull, Peak Fresh Produce, Sierra Madre, Markon First Crop, Markon Essentials, Rio Blue, ProSource, Rio Valley, and Sysco Imperial. Representative examples of product labels are below.
