Reds' Jonathan India named Baseball America's 2021 Rookie of the Year
Jonathan India is Baseball America's Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year. The sports magazine tabbed the Cincinnati Reds infielder as the league's most productive rookie, becoming an essential cog in the Reds lineup.The second baseman hit .269 with 21 home runs and as a leadoff man drew comparisons to Pete Rose. His .376 on-base percentage was among the top 10 in the National League.Fifteen of India's 21 home runs came after the All-Star break, and he ranked fifth in the National League in on-base percentage and eighth in runs. Defensively, India was also solid.Baseball America's Rookie of the Year should not be confused with the Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year Award, which is voted on by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. That award will be announced in November, with India still being a top contender for NL Rookie of the Year.Despite a slow start and a rash of injuries, the Cincinnati Reds stayed within striking range of the playoffs for most of the summer — but it couldn't last. They finished 83-79 in the NL Central, behind the Brewers and Cardinals, who claimed the second wildcard.Cincinnati recorded its first winning season in a full 162-game campaign since 2014. They were 31-29 in pandemic-shortened 2020.
