COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ivan Douglas, the starting left tackle on Ohio State football’s 2020 national championship team, died Thursday due to complications from COVID-19, his family confirmed.
The Benedictine High School alum was 41.
According to a post on the GoFundMe page set up by Douglas’ family, he died at 8:40 a.m. on Thursday. Douglas was first hospitalized on Sept. 22 and recently had been in intensive care.
Douglas won a state championship with Benedictine in 1996. His greatest moment as a Buckeye came as a starter on the 2002 team that went 14-0 under Jim Tressel and defeated No. 1 Miami in the BCS National Championship.
However, Douglas also suffered from blood clots. The reoccurrence of those clots after his junior season led to the premature end of his career.
According to the GoFundMe page, Douglas is survived by his wife and sons ages 1 and 3. He was employed as a social worker “helping children in crisis.”
