A small portion of Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston was closed by the city Friday while engineers inspect apparent damage to pilings along the river.
The rear mezzanine is off-limits, but the city said the rest of the building -- including the ballroom -- is safe to occupy.
“Functions are still permitted utilizing the majority of the facility. We have been informed that Rhodes has a structural engineer evaluating these concerns,” a statement from the city said.

An official from Rhodes said the ballroom would be limited to 600 people.
The venue said no upcoming wedding parties are that large, but a Chamber of Commerce event will be rescheduled.
The rear of the historic ballroom is built along the banks of the Pawtuxet River. The damage was reported by a kayaker.
