New Character Featurette for Marvel's ETERNALS Mentions DC's Superman

Marvel has released a new featurette for Eternals that puts the spotlight on the ancient heroic protectors of Earth. It features the cast of the film breaking down each of their characters, and it also offers up some new footage.

One interesting thing in the video that I noticed is that Superman is mentioned! This is the first time a DC character has been mentioned in a Marvel movie. The video shows the son of Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos confusing Richard Madden’s Ikaris with the Man of Steel. The kid says, "Dad, that’s Superman – with the cape... and you were shooting laser beams out of your eyes.”

I guess this means Superman exists in the MCU in some way, which is kind of fun to think about. I think the kid is referring a version of Superman that he knows from comic books and movies and stuff. I don’t think Superman is actually flying around in the MCU, but who knows…. maybe he is!

James Gunn previously talked about a Marvel and DC movie crossover, saying, "I’ve casually talked to the powers-that-be at both Marvel and DC about it. I would love for it to happen. I don’t think it’s likely, but I don’t think it’s an impossibility either. THAT SAID, just constantly seeing crossovers and mashups is less enchanting to me than a strong story."

It’s also explained that the story takes place across two time periods. “One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup."

The cast for the film also includes Angelina Jolie as Thena, Gemma Chan as humankind-loving Sersi, Richard Madden as the all-powerful Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as cosmic-powered Kingo, Lia McHugh as the eternally young, old-soul Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as the intelligent inventor Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as the super-fast Makkari, Barry Keoghan as aloof loner Druig, Don Lee and Gilgamesh, with Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, and Salma Hayek as the wise and spiritual leader Ajak.

Eternals is set to release in theaters on November 5th.
