UMass Memorial police officer Loi Ha died Thursday after battling COVID-19.
“We will never forget your contagious smile or your love for life,” UMass Memorial Police tweeted. “Forever our friend, our brother, and a beloved member of this department and community.”
A GoFundMe was set up on Sept. 9 for Ha to help pay his medical bills after he was in the hospital for COVID-19. As of Friday, the account had raised more than $16,000.
“For those of you who don’t have the pleasure of knowing Loi, he is the most loving, kind, and generous person,” the GoFundMe stated. “Loi has a laugh that is so contagious you don’t even have to know the joke to laugh along with him. He would do anything for those who are in need, even if that meant giving you the shirt off of his back.”
It said Ha was an Army veteran and served in Iraq. He was also a police officer for UMass Memorial and ”always dreamed of being an officer.”
The post also stated Ha had been on a ventilator.
Since Sept. 9, people have donated to the GoFundMe and left encouraging messages for Ha. The UMass Memorial Police Union also donated.
Some have also written condolences on social media.
“We offer our deepest sympathy to our brothers and sisters at the UMass Memorial Police Department in Worcester along with the family and friends of Officer Loi Ha,” the Worcester Police Department tweeted.
“We will take it from here, Godspeed,” UMass Memorial Police tweeted.
