Delaware State Police Arrest Wilmington Man For Two Carjackings- Claymont

Claymont- Delaware State Police have arrested 19-year-old Jamir Leggett of Wilmington, DE, for robbery and related charges following two carjackings that occurred in September and October.

The first incident occurred on September 7, 2021, at approximately 7:51 a.m., troopers were dispatched to a carjacking at Exxon, located at 3700 Philadelphia Pike Claymont, DE. The investigation determined the 52-year-old male victim was seated in his 2013 Acura MDX while fueling his vehicle. While seated, two male suspects approached the car from the rear and opened the victim’s door, which was left cracked open. One of the suspects pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded the keys to the vehicle. The victim refused to give the suspects his keys, resulting in the second suspect physically assaulting him. Both suspects pulled the victim from the Acura, entered it, and fled Northbound on Philadelphia Pike. The victim refused medical treatment at the scene.

The second incident occurred at approximately 9:40 p.m., Saturday, October 2, 2021, in the parking lot of the Food Lion located at 3609 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont. An unknown suspect approached a 73-year-old male sitting inside of his 2020 gray Hyundai Sonata parked in front of the store. The suspect opened the driver side door to the vehicle and demanded the car keys. The victim refused and the suspect began to physically assault the victim. The victim fought back, but was overtaken after two additional suspects entered the front passenger door to the vehicle and pulled the victim out. All three suspects then fled northbound Philadelphia Pike in the stolen vehicle. The victim sustained minor injuries, but refused medical treatment at the scene.

Through investigative means Jamir Leggett was determined to be one of the suspects and troopers obtained a warrant for his arrest. On October 21, 2021, Jamir was located in the Claymont area and troopers successfully took him into custody without incident.

Jamir was transported to Troop 2 where he was charged with the following crimes:

  • Robbery 1st Degree (Felony)- 2 Counts
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of Felony (Felony)
  • Assault 2nd Degree (Felony)
  • Conspiracy 2nd Degree (Felony)- 2 Counts
  • Theft $1,500 or Greater (Felony)
  • Assault 3rd Degree

Jamir was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court #2 and committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on $160,000 cash bond.

Delaware State Police is still seeking the public’s assistance with identifying the remaining suspects.

This case remains under investigation by the Delaware State Police Troop 2 Criminal Investigative Unit.
