Driveway plowing program helps seniors get out and get going: Strong Points

Strongsville will once again help seniors with its senior driveway plowing program.

STRONGSVILLE, Ohio -- Winter is on its way -- and with it comes snow. The City of Strongsville is once again establishing the senior driveway plowing program for the 2021-2022 winter season.

Those wishing to participate will be required to register for the program. Go to www.strongsville.org for an application. Only those seniors meeting the age, income and property ownership restrictions listed below will qualify for registration.

Only those who have been registered with the city will receive plowing assistance.

The age requirement is 62 years of age, with no one younger living in the house. The income level is a combined amount of all income of $34,000 or less. This figure is based on last year’s income level plus the addition of the 1.3 percent cost-of-living adjustment established by Social Security for 2020.

When you register, you must provide all of the following:

1. Proof of age photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport etc.)

2. Proof of total pre-tax income per household. Most current year -- 2020 -- income tax return (1040 form) REQUIRED for income verification. No exceptions!

3. Proof of home ownership (property tax bill)

4. Completed and signed application form

Application forms and required documentation (copies accepted) can be dropped off at The Ehrnfelt Senior Center, 18100 Royalton Road, now until Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You may also mail the information to The City of Strongsville Service Department, Attn: Snow Care, 16099 Foltz Parkway, Strongsville, Ohio 44149.

Applications for program registrations must be received no later than Nov. 13 to be considered for registration. All applicants will be notified by the second week of December.

If you do not qualify, there is a list of licensed plow drivers available through the Strongsville Building Department on Foltz Parkway, or by calling 440-580-3105 or emailing building@strongsville.org.

Hip and knee arthritis: Larry Lika, DO, from the orthopedics department at Southwest General, will discuss current approaches to hip and knee arthritis, from non-surgical to surgical options, at 10 a.m. Nov. 16.

Seeking volunteers: The Southwestern Cuyahoga County AARP Foundation has kicked off volunteer recruitment for its Tax-Aide program, the nation’s largest volunteer-based tax preparation service. Volunteers may sign up to assist taxpayers either in person or virtually, with a number of roles available.

In addition to tax preparers, whom the program will train, Tax-Aide needs people who can provide technical and communications assistance, interpreters and program leaders.

Volunteers come from a variety of industries and range from retirees to university students. All levels and types of experience are welcome. Recruitment of volunteers is on a non-discriminatory basis, without consideration of race, religion, gender, disability or sexual orientation.

Tax-Aide offers free in-person and online tax preparation and assistance nationwide to taxpayers with low to moderate income.

Because of the complexity of the U.S. tax code, many taxpayers overpay their taxes or turn to paid tax services they cannot afford. Some may forgo filing their taxes and miss out on the credits and deductions they’ve earned because they are unable to pay for assistance.

Tax-Aide volunteers can help by providing necessary services in communities where there is the greatest need.

Tax-Aide has grown since its inaugural team of just four volunteers in 1968 and has served over 68 million taxpayers since its inception. The program has volunteers in every state, who typically number more than 30,000.

To learn about volunteer opportunities, visit www.aarpfoundation.org/taxaide, call 1-888-OUR-AARP (1-888-687-2277) or contact Steve Donovan at 440-237-7348.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is offered in coordination with the IRS.
