New Movies On Demand: ‘Injustice,’ ‘Bergman Island,’ + More

It’s alternate universe week in our newest batch of new movies on VOD. The DC animated film Injustice asks the question, “What would happen if Superman turned truly evil?” As the Man of Steel commits serious atrocities, the only one who can stop him is Batman. And in Bergman Island, a film that takes place on the Swedish island where Ingmar Bergman resided and made several films, a married couple who are both filmmakers teeters on the verge of living out Scenes From A Marriage as they try to find creative inspiration on the island but struggle to connect with each other.

And finally, a look at that alternate universe which consists of an actor playing themself. Introducing, Selma Blair is a moving look at an actress that has been a constant presence in so many films over the last 20 years, and yet her acting career and her life have slowed recently as a result of her 2018 multiple sclerosis diagnosis. Much like this year’s Val Kilmer documentary, Val, which portrayed the actor as a smart, sensitive man whose illness has cost him his career, Introducing, Selma Blair shows off the actress’s biting sense of humor as well as her incredibly vulnerable side as she goes through stem-cell treatments, parents her young son, and discusses her dark family history. Whether or not you’re a fan of her acting, her real-life story and the candor with which she tells are both admirable and moving.

These are just a few of the titles that are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, YouTube, and through your cable service this week. Check out what movies are available to buy or rent on demand now!

Injustice

Injustice is a DC Animation film that’s based on the video game and graphic novel Injustice: Gods Among Us, and it’s basically DC’s version of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, in which our favorite heroes turn against each other. In this alternate DC universe, Superman has been tricked by the Joker into killing Lois Lane and their unborn child, and destroying Metropolis. In the aftermath of all that destruction, Superman spirals out of control on a quest to rule the earth, and its up to Batman to try and stop the newly-evil Superman from destroying everything in his path.

Bergman Island

Poor Vicky Krieps, every vacation she takes turns into something more than she bargained for. First, the actress starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old, where her beach vacation turned into a deathly nightmare that no anti-aging cream could help. And now Krieps stars in Bergman Island as a wife who, while traveling to Fårö, a resort island off the coast of Sweden, starts to question her creativity and her marriage (to Tim Roth). Krieps stars as Chris, a writer and filmmaker at a creative impasse. Her husband Tony is more successful than she, and she wonders if it’s because he’s a man, untethered by child-rearing. Her time on the island leads her to write an intensely personal story that comes alive onscreen, but unfortunately her relationship with Tony ends up suffering for it.
