NYPD officer fires gun during pursuit of knife-wielding man in NYC; no injuries reported

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A police officer fired their gun following a police pursuit for a knife-wielding man making threats in Lower Manhattan Friday morning, the NYPD said.

At approximately 8:49 a.m., police were called to Elizabeth and Grand streets for an emotionally disturbed man who was waving knives near the busy intersection.

Officers caught up with the man at East Houston and Bowery where they observed him threatening people with knives, according to authorities.

Police were led on a brief foot pursuit, and attempted to taser the man but were unsuccessful.

An officer then let off one round but did not strike the man, the NYPD said.

The suspect was apprehended and officials recovered two knives.

There were no injuries reported.

The man was transported to New York-Presbyterian Downtown Hospital for evaluation, authorities said.

The police officer was taken to Bellevue Hospital for evaluation.

Authorities rerouted traffic and shut down surrounding streets and an investigation is ongoing.
