Military conflict presentation: Citizens of Brecksville have participated in every conflict our nation has faced except for the War of 1812. Many of those soldiers, sailors and Marines are buried at Highland Cemetery, and some at Brecksville’s four other cemeteries.

Thanks to local historians Cathie Clager and Rita Wolansky, some of their stories will come to life at 11 a.m. Nov. 5 at the Brecksville Human Services Center, 2 Community Drive.

Clager and Wolansky will present their multimedia presentation covering the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War and the Gulf Wars. They will examine the causes of the wars, narrate the soldiers’ stories and discuss what was happening in Brecksville at those times.

Reservations are not necessary, but call the center at 440-526-2499 so that they know how many people will be coming.

Musical revue: The Broadview Heights Spotlights group is one of over 1,500 theaters across the world presenting a special musical revue, Music Theatre International’s “All Together Now!: A Global Event Celebrating Local Theatre.”

Featuring many familiar faces from Spotlights’ previous productions, performances are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13 and 3 p.m. Nov. 14.

Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International (MTI) created this revue for theaters across the globe to use as a local fundraising event, all performed over the same weekend. “All Together Now!” features songs from MTI’s beloved catalogue of musicals, including “Annie,” “Come from Away,” “Godspell,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Matilda,” “Once on This Island,” “Rent” and many more.

MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen stated: “MTI’s ‘All Together Now!’ is about bringing people back to the theater, whether as audience members or cast, crew and musicians. The revue features songs from the world’s most iconic musicals, so there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy.

“Our goal with this worldwide event is for organizations to provide hope, inspiration and excitement to their communities through the transformative power of musical theater.”

Tickets are $20 for this special event and may be purchased at www.broadview-heights-spotlights.org.

All audience members must wear a mask in the Broadview Heights Spotlights building, regardless of vaccination status. It is the responsibility of the ticket purchaser to inform all members of their party of this requirement. Failure to comply with this policy will result in the forfeiture of purchased tickets.

Hunger program: This will be the 39th year for the Yuletide Hunger Program, which provides food for low-income families in Brecksville, Broadview Heights, Seven Hills and Independence.

Because of the coronavirus, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Schools will not be collecting food again this year to cut back on the number of hands handling the food. Instead, contributors are asked to bring food to their city’s respective senior centers. Brecksville is at 2 Community Drive, Broadview Heights at 9543 Broadview Road, Independence at 6363 Selig Drive and Seven Hills at 7325 Summit View Drive.

Also, and more importantly, the Yuletide committee is asking for monetary donations by check made payable to the City of Brecksville, with Yuletide Hunger Program on the memo line. The reason for checks payable to Brecksville is because that is where the Yuletide treasury is.

Funds received will be used to buy gift cards so that recipients may purchase their own food.

Leaf pickup: Brecksville’s curbside leaf pickup program has begun. Do not rake your leaves onto the street pavement. They are to be piled along your tree lawn area, not on the roadway surface. Do not mix any other materials -- such as branches, small logs or any other items other than leaves.

Each year, there are problems when residents knowingly or accidentally discarding other yard waste with the leaves. Also, remember that the pickup route begins at one end of the city, moving to the other end, and then begins again.

Valor Acres: Construction trailers are moving onto the Sherwin-Williams site in Valor Acres, as they soon will begin the initial phase of their new R&D facility. Currently, the DiGeronimo Co. is relocating the sanitary sewer that runs through the Valor Acres property.

There is much activity going on at the Valor Acres site. The DiGeronimo Co. continues to work with the Planning Commission regarding the residential phase of Valor Acres. Plans are moving forward regarding the infrastructure that will be installed on all phases of the development.

Membership promotion: The Broadview Heights Recreation Center is offering a special November membership promotion. Starting Nov. 2 and running through Nov. 30, if you buy an annual membership, you get one free month. It’s a great deal and a great way to get your exercise program going.

Let the Brecksville, Broadview Heights and North Royalton communities know what is going on with your organization, church, school, business or family. Email me at shirleymac48@att.net.
