Services will be held this weekend for James S. Diliberto, 87, of Liverpool, who died Sunday in a car accident.
Diliberto, who was born in Syracuse, served in the U.S. Army. He later went to work for the Herald-Journal newspaper. He was an artist in the art department and retired from the paper after 40 years.
According to one retiree who worked with him, a particular project he was known for was a map tracking the progress of a moose through Central New York. Diliberto’s nickname in the newsroom was “Muzzy.” He recalled that Jim kept the retirees together, organizing events and activities.
A Facebook posting described Diliberto as a “good mentor, always encouraging and welcoming with a gentle manner, quick with a story, a smile and a soft laugh.”
Diliberto enjoyed fishing, gardening, and bowling. As one person posted about him: “His favorite subjects to talk about were his wife and kids. Also the old days at the newspaper.”
Another friend posted: “Just a great guy who loved doing for others and who loved a good laugh.”
Calling hours will be from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Thomas J. Pirro Jr. Funeral Home, 3401 Vickery Road, North Syracuse. A service will follow at 12:30 p.m.
Donations may be made to the Humane Association of CNY.
