In a meeting this week in Iowa with U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack, Mexico’s Ag Minister says they will continue to buy GMO corn from the U.S. Instead, Mexico has moved to ban its farmers from growing transgenic or corn with biotech traits for human consumption. South Dakota Corn Executive Director DaNita Murray says on the surface that’s good news since Mexico is one of the top customers for U.S. corn.
However, earlier this month Mexico denied the approval of a new Bayer biotech corn product. Murray says that may be another strategy for banning GMO corn from the U.S.
And she says the longer trait approvals are stalled, even in corn used for food products, the more likely it will end up hurting feed exports.
Previously Mexico had published an executive order that intended to ban the use of GMO corn for human consumption in 3 years.
