Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street fans thought they spied a character return to the show in the background – but Corrie bosses have debunked the theory.

In Wednesday's episode (October 20) of the hotly anticipated Super Soap Week on ITV, Harvey was revealed to have escaped from prison to take his revenge on Leanne.

As Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor) was determinedly hunting down Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), suddenly he was swallowed up by a terrifying sinkhole, thankfully taking Leanne out of his reach.

The episode's conclusion saw a ghostly figure standing over Leanne as she was led away to safety. They were walking past a parked police car in a ghost costume with an eerie smiling face.

Viewers took to Twitter to speculate who the ghost might be, with many believing it to be Sharon Gaskell mysteriously returning to the cobbles.

Sharon was last seen back in June, when she made a deal with police to testify against Harvey to secure her freedom. She gave her evidence to court, guaranteeing his incarceration, and took over his firm.

Digital Spy reached out to sources behind the scenes of Corrie, and they confirmed that the ghost costume had no significance.

Despite the imaginative theories, the ghost costume was merely a supporting extra wearing a spooky costume. Many of these extras can be seen in the background throughout this week's episodes.

The dramatic episode ended in classic Corrie fashion with a shock twist: Harvey was shown to still be alive, reaching for a gun in an ominous cliffhanger.

Previously, Will Mellor teased Harvey's mindset going into the dramatic stunt week: "If anyone's going down, it ain't him and he'll be the last man standing at all costs."

Super Soap Week finally wraps up with its big finale tonight (October 22). Will Harvey and Leanne survive?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
