Scott Speedman is having a blast on the set of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18.
During a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Scott Speedman said that he’s been reading the comments from fans, and most of them are positive.
In the hit ABC medical drama, Speedman plays the role of Nick, who is Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) potential love interest.
The two characters first crossed paths in Grey’s Anatomy Season 14 after Pompeo asked Speedman if he wanted to guest-star in the series.
At the time, Speedman said that he was so naïve to think that his appearance in Grey’s Anatomy was just a one-time deal. After all, he was immediately invited to return to the series, but the timing was just never right.
Finally, Nick and Meredith had the chance to reunite in Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 while the latter was in Minnesota. And since Meredith will be spending more time there, she and Nick will share more screen time in the upcoming episodes.
During his interview, Speedman said that he was thrilled to read all the positive comments about Nick and Meredith on Twitter. And he was equally excited to know that a lot of Grey’s Anatomy fans are shipping Nick and Meredith.
But the Felicity alum made the mistake of scrolling through all the comments on Instagram because this is where he saw several negative comments.
Speedman said that he understands why some fans are concerned about Meredith since the lead character has not been in a lasting relationship since Derek (Patrick Dempsey) died.
The actor also likened the thousands of negative comments to The Shining.
“That was like Shelley Long in The Shining from Jack Nicholson’s writing. It was just, like, 12,000 comments of, you know, diatribes against me. Just all caps, ‘No, no, no,’” he said.
But whether fans like it or not, Speedman’s character Nick will continue to be featured in the upcoming episodes of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 Written Around Scott Speedman’s Character
Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff recently told Deadline that she decided to write Season 18 around Speedman’s character after the actor agreed to appear in the hit series.
“We reached out to Scott as I was envisioning the show. Actually, toward the end of last season, I started saying to Ellen, I’m having this thought, and she was like, ‘Again?’, because I had made that phone call a few times. But this time, we got lucky, he said yes, and we planned the season accordingly,” she said.
One Indication That Nick, Meredith Would Be Together
During the same interview, Vernoff talked about Speedman’s first appearance in Grey’s Anatomy Season 14. She said that Meredith had just gotten out of a series of failed romances when Nick came along.
Pompeo personally asked Vernoff if she could take a break from starring in romance storylines, and the showrunner said yes.
However, Meredith and Nick shared a special moment in one of their scenes. And the latter told her then-patient that Nick made her feel the way Derek made her feel.
Since Derek is Meredith’s one true love, it’s a big deal for her to say that Nick reminds her of her late husband. And isn’t this enough reason for the two characters to get together?
“I think she says at the end of that episode, I felt the way I felt with Derek, I felt things I haven’t felt in a really long time. It was really designed for that purpose, to say she’s capable of feeling, and then I started to see the dailies, and I think I started calling Scott’s team, going, ‘But what if he came back, when might he come back?’ I called several times, but he was making movies and doing things,” Vernoff explained.
Will Scott Speedman Be Part Of Future Grey’s Anatomy Seasons?
During another interview, Speedman said that he’s only signed on to be part of Grey’s Anatomy Season 18. This isn’t surprising because the medical drama has not yet been renewed for more seasons.
But it is important to note that Speedman is a series regular for Grey’s Anatomy Season 18, so he will be featured in multiple episodes.
