TUSTIN – It was a record-breaking night for Tustin on Thursday.

Tobey Schmidt threw for a school-record 507 yards while Dominick Flores broke two school records in the Tillers’ 51-28 victory over Valencia in the Empire League at Tustin High.

Schmidt became the 14th quarterback in Orange County history to throw for over 500 yards while Flores broke the career receptions record and the single-game receiving yards record at Tustin with 238 yards.

“That is a pretty good record,” Tustin coach Anthony Lopez said of Schmidt. “He’s been great. We told him in the beginning that we’re going to trust him and to do your thing. I know from a scheme standpoint, we can throw the ball pretty good against these guys because they’re tough inside.

“We just let them go out and play. Dominick should leave here as the leading receiver in Tustin history. He’s a great athlete and he does some things that are really special. He’s a great kid and I love coaching him.”

Schmidt completed 23 of 31 passes and had six touchdowns for Tustin (6-3, 3-1 in league) to go with his record-breaking passing yards, and Flores had nine catches and three touchdowns.

Both players broke their single-game records by halftime.

The Tillers scored first on a 23-yard Schmidt pass to Armon Fuller. The next five touchdowns would also come through the air as Brandon Flores scored the only rushing touchdown for Tustin.

Schmidt also threw touchdowns to Jonathan Agwanda and Mickey Chinchilla.

“Me and Dom and all the receivers have been working hard after practice,” Schmidt said. “We’re just trying to get our reps and get ready for the playoffs. It’s cool, but the record doesn’t really matter to me. It’s a plus, but we’re worried about winning and getting into the playoffs and winning CIF for sure.”

Valencia (2-7, 2-2) got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a 3-yard run from Gabe Magana.

Valencia added TDs in the second half with a 16-yard run by Jacob Terry and a 57-yard scoring catch by Markki Payne.

While the single-game records were broken by halftime, Flores didn’t break Tustin’s career receptions record until he made his ninth catch of the game in the third quarter.

“It’s a blessing,” Flores said. “Can’t do it without God, and I can’t do it without my team. Especially my quarterback. I couldn’t do it without him.”

Fuller caught four passes for 99 yards and a touchdown for Tustin while Schmidt led the Tillers with 43 rushing yards on seven carries. Agwanda caught three passes for 47 yards and a score.

Draft finished 6 of 8 passing for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Magana rushed for 126 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns.

Tustin will take on Crean Lutheran at Portola High on Thursday, Oct. 28. Valencia will host first-place Cypress on the same night.
