Jacob Markstrom made 33 saves and the visiting Calgary Flames scored two first-period goals and blanked the Detroit Red Wings 3-0 on Thursday.

Markstrom recorded his ninth career shutout and fourth in a Flames uniform. Calgary collected its first victory of the season in three games as it kicked off a five-game road trip in grand style.

Elias Lindholm, Andrew Mangiapane and Matthew Tkachuk scored the goals for Calgary. Erik Gudbranson supplied two assists and also tied for the team lead with four shots on goal.

Alex Nedeljkovic made 26 stops for the Red Wings, who lost for the first time in regulation. They were playing the finale of a season-opening four-game homestand and will now play seven of their next eight games on the road.

Detroit ended up with a 33-29 edge in shots on goal but didn’t create many quality scoring chances. The Red Wings had three power-play opportunities while the Flames came up empty on two power plays. The Flames were the more aggressive team, as they were credited with 22 hits, compared to the Red Wings’ 13.

Red Wings rookie Lucas Raymond led the team with five shots on goal.

Raymond scored his first career goal in Detroit’s 4-1 win over Columbus on Tuesday.

The Flames took the lead at 10:06 of the opening period. Lindholm scored his third goal of the season from the slot on a behind-the-net feed from Johnny Gaudreau. Gudbranson collected the second assist.

Mangiapane backhanded a rebound four minutes later to give Calgary a 2-0 advantage. He emerged with the puck after Gudbranson’s shot from the point. Dillon Dube also had an assist.

The Red Wings were unable to make up ground in the second period despite outshooting the Flames 14-4.

Tkachuk scored an empty-net goal with 2:18 left to clinch the win. He fired the puck from his own zone after a Red Wings turnover.

Detroit will play at Montreal on Saturday, while Calgary continues its road trip with a stop in Washington on Saturday afternoon.
