• Thomas J. Rooney, a former U.S. congressman from Florida, has been named to succeed Alex Waldrop as president and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association. Waldrop is retiring at the end of the year. Rooney is an owner and breeder and has been part of his family’s Shamrock Farm in Maryland, which was founded by his grandfather, Art Rooney Sr. The Rooney family has been the majority owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers since 1933.
• Breeders’ Cup pre-entries will be announced Wednesday, Oct. 27, at 8:30 a.m. on TVG and also will be streamed on breederscup.com. This year’s event is scheduled for Del Mar on Nov. 5-6. Friday’s races will be televised on NBC Sports Network and TVG and streamed on breederscup.com from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday’s races, including the $6 million Classic, will be shown on NBCSN and TVG from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on NBC from 2 to 3 p.m.
• Trainer Bob Baffert will send out two of the five 2-year-old fillies entered for Sunday’s $75,000 Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita. Eda and Benedict Canyon headline the field for the 6-furlong sprint. Eda goes in off a disappointing fifth-place finish as the 6-5 favorite in the Grade I Del Mar Debutante on Sept. 5, a race that was won by stablemate Grace Adler. Benedict Canyon enters the Anoakia off a nose victory in a maiden special weight at Del Mar on Sept. 5. It was the second start of her career.
