Former Rangers star claims he feels sorry for Celtic player

Despite Celtic not having the deepest squad in world football right now, it is safe to say that competition is tight for places with several players vying for one spot.

One position that has become wide open in recent weeks is left-back. Following Greg Taylor’s injury, Adam Montgomery has featured there most often but he has not been very convincing in recent times. Thus, Boli Bolingoli, who looked completely out of first-team plans not too long ago, has gotten a few opportunities as well. On the other hand, Liam Scales will be waiting for his opportunity.

Most interesting, of course, is the situation of Bolingoli. He has played a couple of times so far this season. Firstly in that away defeat against Livingston and then at the weekend in the win away at Motherwell.

Perhaps surprisingly, while talking to Football Insider, Alan Hutton has claimed that he felt sorry for the Celtic player’s situation:

"“It’s very difficult. Most players have been in that situation, I have.“As a defender especially, you need to run of games to get up to speed. You get to know your players beside you, things like that.“It’s very difficult to be in for one game, out for four and back in for one.“From that point of view I do feel sorry for him. He has a second chance at Celtic.“Postecoglou spoke earlier in the season about how well he’d been doing in training and he was due an opportunity. It was up to him to take it.“As a footballer, you just want to play games. It’s really up to him to go and stamp his authority. There’s an opportunity at left-back so it’s up to him whether he can grasp it or not.”"

Is Bolingoli the answer for Celtic at left-back?

Currently, Celtic appear to have a problem in the left-back position. In fact, that has been the case for a while now, since the departure of Kieran Tierney a few years back. The club have not quite been able to replace him till now.

The big question at the moment is, who is the best left-back at Celtic right now? There are quite a few options in the form of Taylor, Bolingoli, Scales and Montgomery. We put up a poll on our Twitter earlier and the results seemed pretty one-sided in favour of the Belgian:

Bolingoli came first with more than half of the votes. Interestingly, Scales, who we have not seen much of till now came at second while Taylor who has played most regularly out of the four was last. Montgomery was third. It will be very interesting to see who Postecoglou decides to go with moving forward in that left-back spot on a long-term basis.
