The temporary ban on campfires and charcoal grilling has been lifted at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Cooler weather and a little precipitation over the course of the last month has reduced the extreme fire danger.

Although visitors can now have campfires in designated fire rings, and although charcoal grilling is now permitted, it is important to always take safety measures. Whiskeytown reminds visitors to always follow these campfire best practices:

Clear all flammable material away from the fire for a minimum of five feet in all directions.

Make a fire only if you have a shovel and sufficient water to put it out.

Always have a responsible person in attendance.

Never leave your campfire unattended.

Never build a campfire on a windy day.

Make sure your campfire is completely out. Drown it with water and stir with dirt, making sure all burned materials are extinguished. Feel with your hand to make sure it’s out cold.

Finally, note that fireworks are not allowed within the National Park System or on any other federal public lands. Thank you for recreating responsibly.
