Oregon health officials reported 1,407 new coronavirus cases and 40 new deaths in the state on Thursday.
With the new confirmed and presumptive cases, Oregon's total since the pandemic first began has risen to 356,061 cases.
The death toll now sits at 4,275. However, earlier Thursday, the Oregon Health Authority announced that, due to a computing error, officials have undercounted the total number of virus fatalities by about 550 COVID-19 deaths.
"Over the coming weeks, OHA will begin reporting approximately 550 deaths among people who died with COVID-19 but whose deaths only became recently known to state epidemiologists due to a technical computer error. This will result in higher death totals as the backlog is resolved."
Hospitalizations across Oregon remained largely unchanged compared to Wednesday's report. The OHA says there are currently 567 COVID-19 patients hospitalized across the state, which is one less than yesterday. There are 133 patients in Intensive Care Unit beds, which is seven more than Wednesday.
As vaccinations continue across the state, the OHA reports that nearly 2.8 million people have had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and more than 2.5 million people have completed a vaccine series. Oregon has administered the following totals of the three vaccines:
- 3,208,051 doses of Pfizer
- 1,935,312 doses of Moderna
- 223,943 doses of Johnson & Johnson
COVID-19 Breakthrough Report
Also on Thursday, the OHA released its weekly update on COVID-19 breakthrough cases -- instances in which someone contracts the coronavirus after being fully vaccinated. Between Oct. 10 through Oct. 16, there were a total of 6,446 virus cases reported. Of those, 76.5% occurred in people who were unvaccinated and 23.5% cases were breakthrough cases.
To date, there have been a total of 32,954 COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases documented in Oregon, according to the OHA. Breakthrough cases have been found in all 36 counties. Of this total, less than 5% of breakthrough cases were hospitalized and 1% have died.
"Cases of COVID-19 are far more common in unvaccinated people. The report shows that the rate of COVID-19 in unvaccinated people is currently four times higher than in vaccinated people... The number of vaccine breakthrough cases identified in Oregon remains very small when compared to the more than 2.79 million Oregonians who have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine."
