A new book about the duo, The Carpenters, shares things not heard before.
Mike Cidoni Lennox, a former 13WHAM reporter, wrote it, and it's different from the one he set out to write.
The longevity of the music of Karen and Richard Carpenter is what drew Cidoni Lennox to write the book.
"What’s always been ignored is this incredible body of music. It's still listened to, it still sells like crazy 50 years later, so we said, 'Let's focus on the music,'" said Cidoni Lennox.
The book title includes "Music Legacy" because Cidoni Lennox did not want to focus on what many other books had: Karen's battle with anorexia.
Cidoni Lennox's book tells the story with never-before-seen photos and more than 100 hours of interviews with Richard.
He was nearly done writing, when Richard had one more thing to say.
"We got there and then he said, 'We need to address this because she is getting thinner in photos and I need to address that the records are not what they were,'" said Cidoni Lennox.
Cidoni Lennox said there were hours of emotional interviews with Richard, speaking about his battle with drugs, Karen's eating disorder and how both impacted their work.
"By the time you get to the end of the chapter—they’re sending him off to rehab. You don’t expect it from this beginning of the end," said Cidoni Lennox.
The book goes on sale Nov. 16, and can be found on Amazon and Barnes and Nobles. Cidoni Lennox is already talking with Richard about a TV special based on his book.
