Kansas City entered the global stage Thursday in hopes of landing a spot in the 2026 World Cup. The FIFA World Cup selection committee received a tour of everything Kansas City has to offer.
The United States will host the 2026 World Cup. It's the biggest sports event in the world, dwarfing the Super Bowl. Kansas City is one of 17 cities bidding to host some of the games. The last World Cup in 2018 was in Russia.
The 2022 tournament will be in Qatar in the Middle East.
The officials of international soccer's governing body, FIFA, spent the day with people boosting Kansas City as a host for some of the month-long tournament's games.
"Nothing in sports can surpass a World Cup match in a passionate city," said Clark Hunt, owner, CEO of the Kansas City Chiefs.
Arrowhead Stadium could be one of the local match sites. But some stadium seats would have to be removed to fit a full World Cup field, the pitch, into the stadium.
"So we will have to, to accommodate the pitch. We'll definitely have to remove seats — sort of in the corners of Arrowhead," said Katherine Fox, director of Kansas City's World Cup bid.
Fox also said the area lacks an extensive public transit system is an issue in the local bid, too.
Kansas City has a well-regarded soccer training facility, which could help local chances basing a team here. The city's central location will help, even though this is not the biggest of cities.
"If you look at the last World Cup, not every game was played in Moscow. You have cities you have never heard of in your life before. Right?" said Colin Smith, of FIFA.
World Cup matches often draw international fans. The early estimate says host cities could earn millions in economic benefits. They would also have to put up some money, too.
Earlier Thursday, FIFA was asked the obvious question.
"'What's it going to take?' And my answer to him was, 'You just got to be who you are,'" Smith said.
The FIFA officials say they'll finish all of their site visits by the end of the year. They hope to announce the host cities early in 2022.
