According to Deadline, the rights to Garth Davis (Lion, Top of the Lake)'s sci-fi thriller film Foe have been obtained in a massive deal with media giant Amazon Studios for around $30M. Along with this comes the news of Oscar-nominee LaKeith Stanfield’s (Atlanta, Knives Out) exit from the film. The Underground Railroad and Old actor Aaron Pierre has replaced Stanfield in the role of Terrance.

Pierre will join Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Little Women) and Normal People star Paul Mescal in the upcoming film, which is based on the 2018 novel of the same name written by Iain Reid, who co-writes the screenplay with Davis.

The sci-fi film tells a near-future story where Junior (Mescal) and Hen (Ronan) are content living in solitude on their farm. One night, without warning, a stranger named Terrance (Pierre) arrives with the news that Junior has been selected to travel to a space station — but Hen won't be given the chance to miss him, because she'll have someone very familiar to keep her company.

Pierre recently landed a role as the voice of Mufasa in the prequel movie to Jon Favreau's The Lion King and will also be the lead in Netflix's Rebel Ridge in place of John Boyega, who departed the film this summer during production for family reasons.

Producers for Foe are Kerry Kohansky-Roberts of Anonymous Content Studios, Davis through I Am That, and See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning. Reid and Samantha Lang are the executive producers and the film is an Anonymous Content Studios production. Libby Sharpe is co-producer.

With filming expected to begin in early 2022, there’s a chance the film could be ready by the end of next year.
