Atlanta NAACP comes against Kasim Reed, chapter President explains

Atlanta NAACP issues a counter-endorsement of former Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed in rare move

The Atlanta NAACP issued an extremely rare repudiation of a specific candidate in the Atlanta mayoral race. Former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, who is running to become the City's top elected official again, was openly criticized in a press release from the Atlanta Branch of the NAACP.

Chapter President Richard Rose defended the organization's decision on The Rashad Richey Morning Show. Rose said that the entire executive committee of the Atlanta branch unanimously agreed that a statement about Reed's former tenure as mayor was warranted. Rose cited Reed's policies as "repressive" to Black people and Black institutions.

The former mayor is currently in a statistical tie for first place with Atlanta City Council President Felicia Moore. Listeners who called in were mixed in their response to the Atlanta NAACP's position. Some supported the organization's decision, while others were critical of the move.
