LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles County Superior Court announced today it is seeking “civic-minded'' applicants for the 2022-23 civil grand jury, which will act as a government watchdog by examining the operations of various county government agencies.
Civil grand jurors may spend weeks or months of time reviewing government institutions after attending detailed briefings and training sessions, according to the court.
Qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens who are 18 or older, able to read and speak English and reside in Los Angeles County for at least a year, but no prior jury service, investigative skills or training are required.
Civil grand jurors typically work full-time -- ordinarily 30 to 40 hours a week, usually meeting daily at 222 S. Hill St. in downtown Los Angeles, and are reimbursed for mileage along with $60 in daily compensation.
Applications are due Nov. 12.
A judge on the court's grand jurors committee will interview qualified candidates, with the applicants then considered for possible nomination and placed in a pool of potential candidates, according to the court.
Twenty-three grand jury members will be selected randomly from the pool of nominated candidates and trained to investigate county, city and joint-powers agencies during the one-year tenure of grand jury service.
At the end of its investigation, the grand jury will issue findings and recommendations in a final report.
