Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has an affinity with the quarterback position, trying to find the right person to play the position at a high rate for several years. The Eagles thought they had that in Carson Wentz, but that relationship did not last, with Wentz being shipped to the Indianapolis Colts.

Despite having second-year quarterback Jalen Hurts on the roster, Roseman was not still trying to bring in another quarterback.

Appearing on CBS Sports Radio’s Zach Gelb Show Wednesday, Sports Radio 790 Houston Texans reporter Aaron Wilson said that the Eagles were heavily involved in trying to trade for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Wilson said the Eagles were so interested that they sent someone to the Houston area to investigate the 20-plus sexual assault lawsuits filed against Watson.

“At one point, Philadelphia was really aggressive in this to the point where Howie Roseman had even contacted Deshaun’s legal team, and he had sent an investigator down here,” Wilson said. “He had done a lot of legwork on this. Eventually, what he ascertained, and I reported this back in August, and I think in late July as well, that Deshaun wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause for the Eagles. He has some power in this. He can choose his own team. If he says no, then the trade is a no.”

Wilson added that Roseman is still keeping an eye on the situation between the Texans and Watson, but Wilson believes that Roseman will not get involved again.

Watson has drawn interest from not only the Eagles but from the Carolina Panthers and the Miami Dolphins. The Panthers appear to be out after Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said Thursday that Sam Darnold was the team’s quarterback, and he was looking forward to seeing what Darnold can do in the future.

The Miami Dolphins appear to be where Watson will land in a trade. Wilson said that Watson has familiarity with Miami, both on and off the field. Wilson added he believes that Watson respects Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, saying Watson has heard positive things about Flores’ leadership.

The Eagles may not have committed to starting quarterback Jalen Hurts during training camp because they may have generally believed they had a shot at landing Watson. If Roseman is truly out, it is a sign that the Eagles are willing to see what Hurts can do for the rest of the season. If they believe Hurts is not the franchise quarterback, they could use their draft picks to acquire another veteran quarterback in the offseason or select a quarterback.
