The most popular topic in Baton Rouge these days is LSU football‘s coaching search.

Tigers athletic director Scott Woodward is searching for a new head coach after the program announced that it will part ways with Ed Orgeron after the 2021 season.

We still have a month and a half left in the 2021 season, so it could be a while before LSU hires a new head coach. The season needs to play out first.

There’s one coach, in particular, that could be an obvious choice for the Tigers by late November.

Mel Tucker could be the guy for LSU football

Michigan State head coach Mel Tucker could be the obvious choice for LSU by the end of business of November 27.

Tucker, a former LSU assistant coach (defensive backs coach in 2000), has an impressive resume — he’s worked under Nick Saban at LSU and Alabama, as well as Kirby Smart at Georgia, along with some NFL experience. And he currently has the Spartans at 7-0.

Michigan State, however, has a tough stretch of games coming up.

Remaining matchups include a home matchup with Michigan on October 30, a visit to No. 25 Purdue on November 6, a road matchup with No. 5 Ohio State on November 20, and a home matchup with No. 9 Penn State on November 27.

If Michigan State somehow sweeps that stretch of games (there’s also a home game with Maryland on the schedule), then I think it’ll be pretty clear that Tucker is one of the top coaches in the nation. And really, even if Michigan State loses one of those games, I still think of Tucker as a future star in the business.

But if Michigan State goes 2-3 or 1-4 in that stretch, then I think it’ll be safe to say that the Tucker hype train will come to a complete stop.

We still need more information before we can determine if Tucker could be the “the guy” for the Tigers.

Win out, and there will be no doubt.
