NEW YORK (CBS Newspath/WKRC) - There's yet another warning for those who shop on Amazon, this one issued by the Federal Trade Commission.
Scammers pretending to be Amazon employees have conned Americans out of $27 million from June of 2020 through June of this year -- that's tops on the list of impersonated businesses.
About 96,000 people were affected by the scams. The typical victim lost $1,000.
Under one of the scams, con artists would call customers and offer to refund them for a supposed unauthorized purchase. The fake rep tricks Amazon users into giving access and that allows them to gain access to online bank accounts.
Remember to never call cell phone numbers provided in texts or messages that you don't recognize. And certainly don't click on random links. Never allow any company remote access to your devices unless you contact them independently to ensure its legitimacy.
