For my money, Jamey Johnson might just be the most underrated artist in all of country music.
The Alabama native has put out some absolute heaters over the course of his career, and even penned one of the best country songs of all time, “In Color”.
But, did you also know that he c0-wrote George Strait’s classic “Give It Away” alongside Bill Anderson and Buddy Cannon?
George included it as the lead single on his 2006 record It Just Comes Natural, and it became his 41st #1 single on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs chart, breaking Conway Twitty’s previous record of 40 on that chart.
Of course, thanks in part to Jamey’s masterful songwriting, the track won George and company the ACM for both the Single of the Year and Song of the Year awards in 2007, as well as the Song of the Year award at the CMA’s that same year, too.
And, Jamey performed it live at Farm Aid in Hartford, Connecticut back in September. I love King George more than most people, but there’s just something about hearing Jamey sing it that hits different.
If there ever was a better country song about leavin’ and breakin’ up, I haven’t heard it yet:
