Poll indicates strong support for civics education in schools

Polco users and readers visiting WNA member websites from Oct. 5 to 19 were asked whether they believed civics education should be required in Wisconsin schools.

We asked this question in relation to Assembly Bill 563, which is supported by the WNA and recently passed the state Assembly. The bill would create a mandatory civics curriculum to be taught in all Wisconsin schools.

Out of 556 respondents, 89% said they supported requiring civics education in all Wisconsin schools, while 6% said local schools should determine their own curriculum. Twenty-seven respondents (5%) said they were unsure.

The full question and results can be found below:

Should civics education be required in Wisconsin schools?

  • Yes, civics education is essential to democratic government: 89% (496)
  • No, local schools should determine their own curriculum: 6% (33)
  • I’m not sure: 5% (27)

A breakdown of the data can be downloaded here.

This poll question and results were made available through a partnership between the WNA and Polco, a national civic engagement company based in Madison, to help Wisconsin newspapers better engage readers and access enhanced data and insights.
