It looks like the Pixel 6 will only be getting three years of Android updates

Prior to the launch of the Google Pixel 6 series, there was a relatively exciting rumor that suggested that Google could offer Android updates up to 2026 and five years worth of security updates. Unfortunately, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

According to a Google support document spotted by Android Police, it seems that the Pixel 6 series will be just like any other Pixel handset released so far, and that it will only be getting three major Android updates up to 2024, which short of Google changing its Android naming scheme will be Android 15.

As for security updates, the rumors were right about this one as the phone will be receiving these updates until October 2026. In a way it’s hard to feel disappointed because this is par for the course for Google and many other handset manufacturers.

In fact, three years worth of Android updates is actually leaning more towards the generous side, but at the same time, we were hoping that with the new Tensor chipset, Google could have found a way to offer Android updates for a longer period of time.

This doesn’t really change the fact that the Pixel 6 is an exciting phone given its new hardware and AI capabilities, but it’s something you’ll want to keep in mind if you’re the type that holds onto their phones for more than three years.
