Chris Olave once rejected Ohio State football, nearly depriving the Buckeyes of an all-time great

Ohio State coach Ryan Day said Thursday that receiver Chris Olave silently decommitted during the recruiting process before ultimately signing with the Buckeyes.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Many know that Ohio State football’s matchup with Indiana sets up a reunion between former Mission Hills High School teammates Chris Olave and Jack Tuttle.

Olave — who could put himself in the conversation as Ohio State’s all-time greatest receiver — was discovered when then-quarterbacks coach Ryan Day went to scout Jack Tuttle. He has been the Hoosiers’ starting quarterback in recent weeks due to Michael Penix’s shoulder injury.

While that story of Olave’s discovery is woven into Buckeye lore, it was apparently incomplete. Day revealed on his radio show Thursday that Olave at one point “silently decommitted” from OSU and considered instead staying out west to play for Utah or USC.

Ohio State eventually made that pledge stand up, and Olave signed in the late period for the 2018 class.

Olave won’t forget 7 fateful seconds against Clemson

By the end of his freshman season, Olave was making game-changing plays as a receiver and on special teams. This season he moved into Ohio State’s career top 10 in receptions (ninth with 141), receiving yards (ninth, 2,269) and touchdown receptions (third, 29). He has a solid chance to finish his career first in yards and touchdown and third in receptions.
