To the Editor:
This is a long overdue gratitude note.
Last Sunday, my son Eli, 20 years old, completed the Detroit Marathon. He decided last fall that he wanted to balance his his intense college experience with fitness, and running was his choice. It was an awesome day!
For the most part it is what I have chosen to help smooth out life’s bumps for 46 years. The idea of lifetime fitness was introduced to me at Christian Brothers Academy, Syracuse, by Mr. Jerry Riordan and Mr. Tom Homeyer. These remarkable and profoundly influencing men modeled a life of fitness with their wonderful, successful running. I am and was mediocre. To this day I think of both men often.
Now with three children of my own, it is a joy to see Liam (22 years old) a bike rider in Chicago , Sarah (17) a dancer and “spinner” as well as the runner mentioned above. Of course, I reinforce these healthy passions and hope for a lifetime of fitness for them.
The remarkable influence teachers have on our society must continue to be appreciated. In addition, if we want the high quality to continue, we must reward our teacher financially and also with our sincere heartfelt respect.
So, thank you, Mr. Riordan and Mr. Homeyer.
