It was another captivating midweek in the Champions League as matchday three offered up spectacular goals and dominant results, while Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo continued their love affair with the competition.

Liverpool came out on top in a five-goal thriller against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano to make them clear favourites to advance from Group B, while PSG put in the work to overcome a resilient RB Leipzig side.

Inter Milan avoided another banana skin against Sheriff Tiraspol while Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid all comfortably dismantled their respective opponents. 

Erling Haaland and Borussia Dortmund proved to be no match for Ajax, who ran out 4-0 winners, while Manchester United completed a sensational second-half comeback against Atalanta with that man Ronaldo popping up with a last-gasp winner. Who else?

But who really shone for their teams? After each Champions League matchday, Sportsmail will selects its team of the week to highlight the top performers across Europe.

Here's our pick from the third round of group games.

 

GOALKEEPER

Alisson (Liverpool)

There were a number of notable goalkeeping performance during matchday three, with Thibaut Courtois, Manuel Neuer and Geronimo Rulli all getting honourable mentions for their displays, but it is Alisson who makes our team of the week.

While the Liverpool goalkeeper did let in two Antoine Griezmann goals which saw Atletico wipe out the visitors' two-goal lead, he still put in a superb performance to make sure that his side walked away with all three points. 

The Brazilian, who won the Man of the Match award, made huge saves to deny both Griezmann and Yannick Carrasco to help Liverpool hold on to a famous victory at the Wanda Metropolitano.

 

DEFENDERS

Mattia De Sciglio (Juventus)

With Chelsea breathing down their necks, Juventus needed a strong performance against a good Zenit side to make sure they kept top spot in Group H.

And for the game in Russia, Allegri's men needed to keep their concentration at all times if they were to walk away with the win. Mattia De Sciglio did just that as he remained vigilant on his defensive duties while popping up with a crucial assist for the only goal of the game.

The Italian whipped in a superb in-swinging ball from the flank directly onto the head of Dejan Kulusevski, whose goal separated the two sides in a tight contest. 

Sebastian Coates (Sporting Lisbon)

On what was a stunning night for the Portuguese champions, Sebastian Coates did it all in their 4-1 win over Besiktas.

The Uruguayan scored two identical goals from corners in the first half before another one of his headers (from yet another corner) hit the hand of Domagoj Vida, allowing Pablo Sarabia to make it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time.

It was a superb display from the centre back, who remained solid in defence to keep the Turkish hosts at bay in what was a hostile atmosphere in Istanbul. 

Gerard Pique (Barcelona)

After what has been a nightmare start to the campaign, Barcelona desperately needed a win to make sure their they kept their hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages alive.

And when things are tough, you need your veterans to lead by example. Up stepped Gerard Pique to do just that. The 34-year-old scored his 16th Champions League goal – tying the record for a defender – and the only goal of the game to ensure Ronald Koeman's side beat Dynamo Kyiv.

Pique's goal ended Barcelona's five-game winless Champions League run and a club record streak of three straight home losses in the competition, relieving some of pressure that has been weighing the club down. 

Daley Blind (Ajax)

In what was arguably one of the most impressive results of matchday three, Ajax completely tore apart Borussia Dortmund in Amsterdam. Keeping Haaland and Co quiet is one thing, but playing them off the park is another.

Many of Erik ten Hag's men could've featured in this team of the week but Daley Blind put in a sensational shift at left back to not only keep a clean sheet, but to score a brilliantly-hit second goal for the hosts.

Blind then turned from scorer to provider as he picked out Sebastian Haller to score his sixth goal in the Champions League this season. 

 

MIDFIELD

Phil Foden (Manchester City)

Phil Foden continues to show just how vital he's becoming to this Manchester City team and Tuesday was no exception.

The England international played a crucial role in picking apart Club Brugge and got himself an assist after picking out Joao Cancelo with a pinpoint pass, leaving the Portuguese full back to superbly do the rest.

Foden continues to show off his huge range of abilities wherever he is placed on the pitch and he is now one of City's most versatile players.

Jorginho (Chelsea)

The king of penalties has done it again. With two goals from the spot, Jorginho ensured it was a comfortable win for Chelsea on what was a bittersweet night for Thomas Tuchel.

Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner both picked up injuries at Stamford Bridge but the Blues boss would've been impressed with Jorginho's effort from the centre of the park.

The Italian was pulling the strings for Chelsea and made it a nightmare for the Malmo players trying to defend wave after wave of attacking onslaught from the Blues. 

James Milner (Liverpool)

Jurgen Klopp took great satisfaction when his Liverpool side walked away with 'three dirty points' from the Wanda Metropolitano.

It was a rugged display from the Reds, with James Milner putting in a proper shift in midfield and often switched positions to cover any of his side's weaknesses.

It's what fans have come to expect of Milner but it is still very impressive given the calibre of opponent Liverpool were facing here. 

 

FORWARDS

Leroy Sane (Bayern Munich)

With two goals and an assist to his name, Leroy Sane gets the nod for this edition of team of the week.

The German was nearly unplayable at times against Benfica and really should've had a hat-trick in Portugal.

His first goal, a free-kick from just outside the area, was the pick of the bunch before he unselfishly set up Robert Lewandowski to score Bayern's second. A brilliant performance from the former Manchester City man. 

Mohamed Salah (Liverpool)

Is there a player in world football on a better run of form at the moment?

The Egyptian king got Liverpool off to a flying start after skipping past three Atletico defenders before his shot from outside the box was deflected in past Jan Oblak.

He then had to keep his cool to convert a penalty in the second half to win all three points for the Reds, which means he has scored 12 goals in 11 games this season. Remarkable stuff from the 29-year-old. 

Vinicius Junior (Real Madrid)

It was a difficult call leaving Karim Benzema out of our team of the week, but Vinicius Junior is more than deserving of his spot.

The Brazilian showed real composure to calmly dink the ball over the Shakhtar Donetsk goalkeeper for his first goal, but it was his second that made everyone stand up and take notice.

Picking up the ball from outside the box, Vinicius weaved past three Shakhtar defenders with a series of stepovers and quick feet to match, before smashing the ball in at the near post to put the game to bed. 

He then set up compatriot Rodrygo to round off a stunning performance.
