It took more than 14 years but Appalachian State has knocked off another ranked opponent.

The Mountaineers, who were an FCS school when they shocked Michigan in 2007, upended 14th-ranked Coastal Carolina, 30-27, in a Sun Belt contest Wednesday.

This marked the first victory over a ranked team for Appalachian State as an FBS school.

The winning margin came on a field goal as time expired by Chandler Staton from 24 yards. Staton is 11-for-11 on the season in field-goal attempts.

Coastal had attempted to let the Mountaineers score two plays earlier but the Appalachian State running back wisely took a knee to let the clock tick because the Chanticleers had used their timeouts.

The game changed in the second quarter after a touchdown that saw Appalachian State cut a 14-0 deficit in half on a 1-yard run by Camerun Peoples and PAT.

The Mountaineers went for an onside kick and recovered it, swinging momentum in a big way.

Mountaineers quarterback Chase Brice, who'd transferred from Clemson to Duke and then to Boone, threw for 347 yards and two touchdowns, and Malik Williams had 10 receptions for 206 yards with a touchdown.

Camerun Peoples ran for a pair of TDs for Appalachian State (5-2, 2-1).
