SAM DEL ROWE, REPORTER, FINANCIAL ADVISOR IQ: Hi. My name is Sam Del Rowe. I'm a reporter with Financial Advisor IQ, and I'm with Jason Barsema, co-founder and president at Halo Investing. Halo is an investment platform for protective investments. What are the key aspects of protective investments?

JASON BARSEMA, CO-FOUNDER & PRESIDENT, HALO INVESTING: Well, what protected investing is it allows advisors and investors to ultimately get a level of downside investment protection against market decline. So think of it as kind of like insurance around your investment, or having that comfort of a cushion against volatility or market declines.

But while you have that comfort of the cushion, structured notes and protected investing products such as annuities and buffered ETFs as well-- Halo encompasses all three products-- allow you to participate in the upside of the market as well.

SAM DEL ROWE: Why are advisors interested in protective investments?

JASON BARSEMA: I think that there's two reasons. Number one, and focusing more on the short term, this is a very challenging market as you're seeing equity valuations where they are and obviously interest rates at all-time lows. You know, for people who don't have products like structured notes, you're forced to either take a lot of risk in the stock market or basically earn nothing with bonds. And most of us need something right in between.

And that's where structured notes and protected investing can be very powerful within one's portfolios. It helps bridge that risk gap between stocks and bonds. Longer term, as we know, demographics are getting older in this country. People are getting older in this country. As we all get older, we need to be more conservative in our portfolios. We need to generate income in our portfolios.

But we also need to be able to achieve a return that allows us to get through retirement and hopefully leave a little bit left to pass on to future generations. That's what I love about protected investing and structured notes is that they can help accomplish all of those things.
