New Phila well represented at Division I State Golf Tournaments

Times-Reporter Staff Report
New Philadelphia's boys golf team won the Aquafina Tuscarawas County Classic earlier this season. Last week, the Quakers claimed a Division District title and a State berth.

The New Philadelphia High School golfing programs will be well represented as the boys golf team and senior Sydney Devore will compete as an individual in the Division I State Tournaments at the Ohio State University Scarlet and Gray Courses in Columbus beginning Friday and concluding Saturday.

Senior Shad Kenily shot a tournament best 75 to lead New Philadelphia to a 312 score and the Division I Boys East/Southeast District Golf Championship played at EagleSticks Golf Club in Zanesville last week.

Senior Austin Erickson added a 78 and senior Jacob Hootman had a 79, while sophomore Nathan Menapace posted an 80. Sophomore Louis Devore also participated and shot an 82.

They will compete on the Scarlet Course of Ohio State University.

Meanwhile, Devore punched her ticket to the Division I Girls State Golf Tournament after winning the Division I East/Southeast District crown at EagleSticks Golf Club last week as well.

Sydney Devore

Devore was the overall medalist as she fired a 3-under par 69 with a 34 on the front nine and a 35 on the back nine. She finished one stroke ahead of Libby Aleshire of Miami Trace.

She will compete on the Gray Course on the campus of Ohio State University.

New Philadelphia head coach Brian Migoni said Devore was at the top of her game.

"Sydney played great golf today," said Migoni after her round. "She worked very hard in our practice rounds, and she was able to identify which holes gave her problems in the past and developed a plan how to attack them. She stuck to her plan, even when things were not going her way. Her mental toughness was on full display after struggling on No. 15, but followed it up with consecutive birdie putts on 16 & 17.
