The Houston Texans seem to be on the verge of trading Deshaun Watson to the Miami Dolphins.
Watson has been inactive for each of the team’s first six games, but it appears as though that isn’t serving as a deterrent.
According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, a deal looks to be creeping towards occurring.
“The Texans could finally be getting closer to trading quarterback Deshaun Watson to the Miami Dolphins — a team they play Nov. 7,” McClain wrote. “Even though the NFL trading deadline isn’t until Nov. 2, a deal could go down this week, according to people familiar with the negotiations.”
Assuming this trade comes to fruition, the obvious follow-up question is: what happens to Tua Tagovailoa?
According to Coty M. Davis of The Texans Wire, the Washington Football Team could emerge as a third team in a prospective Watson deal.
“In regards to the Texans closing in on a deal that would send Deshaun Watson to the Miami Dolphins, I am hearing that it could be a three team deal that would send Tua Tagovailoa to the Washington Football Team,” he wrote.
Obviously that would serve as something of a win-win for both Miami and Washington. Both squads would get a change at quarterback they desperately need. How Houston would ultimately fare in this exchange remains to be seen.
Also complicating matters is whether Watson would even be able to play if the Dolphins acquired him. The NFL could suspend him for his role in 22 sexual maleficence allegations. While he has yet to have his day in court, leaked text messages and witness accounts seemingly lay enough groundwork for at least some sort of involvement by the league.
After all – NFL personalities have recently fallen on their swords for less egregious indiscretions.
All that being said, it’s clear why Miami wants Watson. Their offense is a mess and he is an All-Pro quarterback. Last season he completed 70.2 percent of his passes for 4,823 yards, 33 touchdowns and seven picks. In addition, he also rushed for 444 yards and three scores.
When he’s on his game, he’s one of the sport’s best players. But the allegations being leveled against him are no joke.
Will Watson ultimately get dealt before Nov. 2? Time will tell.
