Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows retained a top GOP lawyer to represent him in the House select committee’s investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
George Terwilliger, deputy attorney general during the George W. Bush administration, confirmed he is representing Meadows, according to Politico.
Meadows, a former congressman who was chief of staff in the Trump White House at the time of the siege of Congress, was subpoenaed by the panel for documents and deposition testimony last month. So far, members of the committee say he is engaging with investigators.

“You were the president’s chief of staff and have critical information regarding many elements of our inquiry,” Chairman Bennie Thomas wrote in a letter that accompanied the subpoena. “It appears you were with or in the vicinity of President Trump on January 6, had communication with the president and others on January 6 regarding events at the Capitol and are a witness regarding the activities of the day.”
Video shows Meadows was backstage with former President Donald Trump’s speech to supporters on Jan. 6 before the riot. During his address near the White House, Trump claimed there was widespread fraud in the 2020 election. He urged the crowd to “fight much harder” and “stop the steal.”

Terwilliger served in the Justice Department for 15 years, including when Trump’s attorney general William Barr served his first stint leading the agency during the Bush administration. He also served on Bush’s legal team in 2000 during the Florida recount.
Three other Trump advisers, Steve Bannon, Dan Scavino, and Kash Patel, have also been subpoenaed by the select committee.
Bannon refused to cooperate, and the panel voted to recommend holding him in criminal contempt on Tuesday. A full House vote is expected Thursday.
