Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was almost grabbed by a pitch invader in wake of the Red Devil’s victory over Atalanta on Wednesday night.

Ronaldo, who was the hero for Manchester United in the previous match week of the Champions League against Villarreal, delivered the goods once again as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men overturned a two-goal deficit to secure all three points against Atalanta.

The Portuguese forward, clearly delighted after being the match-winner on the night, celebrated in front of the TV cameras after the full-time whistle. In the clip, you can see a situation unfolding behind him, with a fan having reached the pitch with stewards chasing behind him.

The fan manages to touch Ronaldo and grab his shirt before being pulled away by the stewards. You imagine he didn’t have any ill intentions for the Man United star, but regardless you would have to consider this a close call for the Old Trafford security team.

It’s a rather morbid topic to be discussing in wake of a football match, but just a matter of days after Sir David Amess was murdered in a suspected terrorist attack, you wonder how far away we are from seeing an incident of that nature on a football field.

Fans are continually able to get onto the field of play and get into direct contact with footballers. You would have thought the relevant authorities would be a little bit more vigilant through fear of what could one day happen.

We cannot live our lives in fear and we cannot allow the evil actions of a vast minority dictate how we live our lives and play our football matches, but at the same time it’s ignorant to cross our fingers and hope that no attack of this kind will ever occur at a football ground.
